Safety Tips

Safe riding is the key to an enjoyble ride. In order to be treated as equals with motor vehicles you must obey all the rules of the road. Be sure to share the road properly.

Helmets:
Indiana does not have a helmet law, but we strongly encourage you to always wear a helmet.

Go Clockwise:
All routes are marked with signage so so that
riders follow a clockwise direction. This
minimizes riders turning into oncoming traffic.

See and Be Seen:
Wear brightly-colored clothing and reflectors.
Ride with friends. Two bicyclists are
more visible than one.

Railroad Tracks:
Cross railroad tracks as close to a right angle
as possible to prevent falls.

Signaling:
Know your hand signals. (See below)

Use Paved Shoulders:
Ride on paved shoulders when they are available. Highways with paved shoulders usually have higher volumes of traffic.

Items to Bring Along:
Cell phone, identification card, medical card,
first aid kit, bicycle tire repair kit, and extra
water.
